Need Membership Stats, Salary Survey info, or Operations Survey details? Find it all in ACCE's Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking

HERO Team / Sarah Myers on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 12:00:00 am

Is it time for your chamber's annual reviews, board retreats, strategic planning or annual reports? Find metrics to benchmark your chamber's performing using ACCE's new survey platform Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking. The system is FREE to ACCE members and you can access it 24/7, 365 days per year.

Use your ACCE login to get started. If you don’t know it, request it here or email HERO@acce.org.

When you first login to DCB, you will see a “splash” or intro screen. Simply click “Close” at the end of the splash screen and you will be launched into the platform where you will see the survey sections for Chamber Profile (required data) and Operations Survey. There is also a Salary Survey section that is open to CEO members or their delegates. CEO's can email permission to HERO@acce.org

Start by reviewing your Chamber’s data in the Chamber Profile and complete any questions which are blank. The Profile section is required. Note the fiscal year you are working with. Currently the system is defaulting to FY2013. For immediate reports and comparisons, you will want to use FY2013. We did just open up data entry for FY2014 which you can now enter at any time, and those reports will be available in the early new year.

After you’ve updated the Chamber Profile, review and update all the sections under the Operations Survey and in the Salary Survey. Note the fiscal year you are working with. There are several new questions to answer in all of the survey sections. The Salary Survey has been expanded to include Senior Staff, Mid-Level, Sales Staff, and Support Staff, in addition to the CEO.

If you participated in previous surveys, your data was migrated. In the Salary Survey, only the CEO data was migrated because there are so many new questions in the survey. Please be sure to check the information for each fiscal year available. You can enter FY2014 data for those of you who have completed and audited your FY2014.

There are 2 options for viewing the results, both of which have robust filtering options for the best comparisons:

  1. Under “Compare Chambers” for each of the survey sections, apply the filters, and you can see your chamber’s responses to each survey question, compared to the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles of other participants. For Membership Statics, Revenue and Expenses, see the data under the Operations Survey. For Salary data, see the Salary Survey section.
  2. Under “Reports and Charts” for each survey, you can select the filters to apply, then download either the full Operations Survey Report or the Membership Statistics Report in the Operations Survey; or download the CEO Report in the Salary Survey. These reports show where your chamber stands with the calculations for revenue, expenses, membership stats, and more, compared to the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles. Note that we are working on building additional Salary Survey reports right now and will have these available soon!

Access Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking anytime you need to - 24/7, 365 days per year. New this year! No waiting for ACCE to compile data into a presentable format—just enter your data for all chamber positions and your FREE results will be formatted automatically. The Salary Survey is open to CEOs or their delegates. (CEOs can email permission to HERO@acce.org)

CLICK HERE to participate in ACCE's new Salary and Benefits Survey! Login with your ACCE username and password. If you don't know it request it here or email HERO@acce.org.

FY 2012 and FY 2013 can be updated now. FY 2014 data will be opened up the first of November.  If you would like the most current salary data now, you would need to enter 2013 data and retrieve 2013 data through the Compare Chambers or Reports and Charts tools. Your comprehensive salary survey results are free; all we need is for you and your peers to enter the data.

A few tips for getting started...

1. If you participated in the previous Salary Survey the CEO Salary data was migrated. The Operations Survey data was also migrated. However, there are many new questions. If you previously participated, review each of the survey sections and update your data. If your chamber did not participate in the previous surveys, you can still catch up and enter your data now for either FY 2012 or FY 2013. FY 2014 will be open in November.

FY definition: For ACCE's surveys, we ask that you use your actual financial data ending in the fiscal year specified. As of now, because FY 2014 data collection is not open yet, for the most recent and immediate results, you will need to use FY 2013. You can also catch up and enter or review your data for FY 2012. Coming next year, the platform will provide a year-over-year comparison feature.

2. Start with Section 1 - Chamber Profile and review or update any data. Then move on to Section 2 - Operations Survey or Section 3 - Salary Survey. Review, update, or catch up with entering your chamber's data. In the Salary Survey section, be sure to complete all the areas, including salaries for CEO, Senior Staff, Mid-Level Staff, Sales Staff, and Support Staff. The system walks you through each section and you can see how many questions you've answered for each area.

3. In Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking, visit "Support" in the upper right hand corner for definitions, clarifications and to download the Quick Start Guide or the Data Collection Worksheet - a spreadsheet of all the questions for each section in the platform.

4. Read more tips on Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking here.

5. When you have 50% or more of the questions answered, you can access the Compare Chambers and Reports and Charts tools for each of the survey sections and areas. Use the filters for the most accurate comparisons.

6. Compare Chambers shows your chamber’s raw data and answers, metric-by-metric, for each question within the survey sections.

a. Use this to view your chamber’s answer and percentile on-screen, plotted alongside the 25th, 50th/median, and 75th percentiles.

b. Use the filters for true insight and apples-to-apples comparisons. Create your own Peer Cluster filter, which chambers you choose, using aggregate data to keep actual data anonymous.

c. View or download these stats metric-by-metric with the On-Demand charting and save as PPT or PDF. Insert into slides or reports.

d. Use the “Save As” feature to download (PDF or Excel) your responses shown with the percentiles.

7. Reports and Charts shows the calculations and ratios you’ve seen in the past with our report publications for Operations Survey, Membership Statistics, and Salary Survey.

a. Select the filters to build your reports with and set your benchmarks. The Peer Cluster filter can also be applied here. Create as many different Peer Cluster groups as you’d like and re-rerun the reports to view the different benchmarks and your chamber’s activity

b. Download reports for your Chamber’s Profile, Operations Survey and Membership Statistics, and Salary reports (CEO report available now; non-CEO salary report coming soon this fall as soon as we have enough data to build reports. We need your help to get the data in here so we can get the data out for you!)

c. Download the reports in PowerPoint in a matter of seconds!

8. Need help? Email HERO@acce.org and we can assist. We can also schedule a webinar demo for your and your chamber or join us in our next Lunch and Learn Webinar Series, held the 3rd Wednesday monthly at 12:30-1 Eastern.

We welcome your testimonials, case studies, questions, and feedback. Would you like to be a part of our future Lunch and Learn Webinar Series on Dynamic Chamber Benchmarking to showcase how you’re using the platform? We want to hear from you. Email HERO@acce.org.

Grant resources for your chamber

HERO Team / Sarah Myers on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 7:00:00 am

Chambers, like all businesses, investigate ways to bring in funding. Grants are one funding stream to look at. Our Chamberpedia page on Grants and Contracts addresses starting points for grant research. Federal grant and contract money can be another viable source of chamber income. However, seeking and securing these funds can be time consuming and expensive. The acquisitions process is typically heavy in administration. Once an agreement is reached, a chamber must be diligent in avoiding conflicts of interest with the government agency. However, many believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. Grants and contracts can provide funds that greatly accelerate community development in areas such as tourism, infrastructure, business and other special projects. Where to start learning about grants? Read ACCE's whitepaper on Chamber Revenue Models. See specifically the section on grants in these chapters: Convention and Visitors Bureaus chapter and Economic Development Funding chapter.

Dive in to grant resources and databases:

  • Foundation Center - Foundation Center is the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide.
  • Grants.gov - Grants.gov is the centralized place to find and apply for federal grants.
  • GrantStation - GrantStation.com, Inc. is a for-profit service that offers nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies the opportunity to identify potential funding sources for their programs or projects as well as resources to mentor these organizations through the grantseeking process.
  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Free Grant Database - This free resource requires sign-up to search for educational and non-profit organization grant opportunities. The database is continuously updated.
  • Small Business Administration Loans & Grants - Resources and directories on finding grants

Facing a disaster? See these specific grants for disaster assistance

Have a few minutes? Read articles from the Chamber Executive archvies with great grant ideas:

Has your chamber had success with grants? Tell us about it! Comment here or tell us more about the resources you used. Email HERO@acce.org.

A policy is a plan

HERO Team / Sarah Myers on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 7:00:00 am

A policy is a plan. Any size of chamber with staffing small to large, needs personnel policies. Chambers often have practices of reviewing personnel policies and handbooks on an annual or every other year basis. Many chambers have a personnel planning committee to help with the task of reviewing policies and other personnel related matters. ACCE's Chamberpedia page on Personnel Policies lists examples of Employee Manuals & Handbooks, Workplace Violence and Safety Policies, Financial Policies, IT-related Policies, Social Media Policies, Remote/Teleworking Policies & Info, and more.

The HERO team often receives questions about social media policies and how to handle the personal use of social media while on the job. Here are several examples of chambers that address social media.

Handbooks provide the guidelines your staff needs to ensure your office runs smoothly and with high standards. Here are several examples of handbooks from chambers.

Does your chamber have a personnel policy, employee handbook, or other type of policy to share? We want to hear from you. Email us at HERO@acce.org.
