Message from the Membership Development Division Advisory Board

Dear Member: We will miss you. Love, Your Chamber

The Dallas business community recently lost a pioneer in his industry. Herb Kelleher founded Southwest Airlines in 1967, which we all knew grew to be the largest low-cost carrier in the world. Something else Southwest Airlines is known for, thanks to Mr. Kelleher, is its reputation for great customer service.

But Southwest’s brand of service is not for everyone. I recently read a story about a Southwest customer that wrote in to the company after every flight with numerous complaints. She didn’t like that seats were not assigned, the absence of a first-class section, the boarding procedure, and possibly most of all, their employees’ casual uniforms and atmosphere. Her final letter to the company stumped their customer relations staff and they decided to elevate it to Mr. Kelleher to respond. And he did so quickly, concisely, and without spending a large amount of time on it. He simply wrote just one line: “We will miss you. Love, Herb.”

I wonder what would happen if we all wrote a similar note to that member who keeps you up at night, finds something to complain about at every event or meeting, and never seems to pay their dues on time? How much time would we get back if we believed so fearlessly in our chamber’s mission that we felt confident in telling those members, simply, “We will miss you. Love, Your Chamber.”?

Sales Training Conference 2019. We are looking forward to seeing both new and seasoned sales professionals in Dallas on March 28-29. Calling all new membership professionals! New to the chamber world? Our four-part roundtable series led by seasoned chamber membership professionals is for you. Our first roundtable is on Wednesday, January 23 at 2 pm ET. Rebecca Wood, Director of Sales & Corporate Partnerships at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, will discuss how to build a sales pipeline and maintain flow. Rebecca will share ideas for prospecting, activities to help fill your pipeline, and getting truthful on what will actually close. Following her presentation, there will be opportunity for questions, brainstorming, and support. Register here!

Empowering Women Leaders. Join us on Thursday, January 31 for this webinar on the Des Moines Downtown Chamber’s Leadership Education and Advancement Pipeline (LEAP) program. The LEAP program supports women business leaders and owners in Central Iowa through skill-building teaching sessions, inspiration, and peer networking. Executive Director Jennifer Chittenden will tell the story of LEAP and how it has contributed to the Des Moines Downtown Chamber's membership and revenue base while championing women leaders and promoting community economic development. Notes and updates:

2019 Sales Mentorship Program. Our 2019 sales mentorship program will match experienced membership professionals with less seasoned peers to provide advice on best practices, a sounding board for sales challenges, and recommended resources on all phases of the sales process, goal setting, time management, sales style, and more. The application deadline for mentors and mentees has been extended until Friday, January 25. More information is available on our Membership Development Division page. There is no cost for the program beyond your ACCE membership dues.

This just in! To make this program work, we need more mentors! ACCE members who apply by the deadline and are accepted as sales mentors will be entered into a drawing for a free 2019 convention tuition. More information and mentor (and mentee) applications are available here.

Sales Contest. Quarter 2 results have been posted. Quarter 3 numbers (for December 1 – February 28, 2019) are due on March 8. For more information, check out our Sales Contest page or contact Monique Bailey.
