2017 Hawaii on the Hill, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Chamber of Commerce Hawaii

2018 Chamber of the Year, State/Province Category Winner

In 2014, the Chamber partnered with its U.S. Senator, Mazie Hirono, on "Hawaii on the Hill" bringing Hawaii companies and industries to Capitol Hill for two days to showcase their products and services, and interface with our nation's policymakers. Last year, there were 115 participants representing 65 companies, up from 98 participants representing 48 companies in 2016, and 135+ participants representing 70+ companies this year. One of the events, Taste of Hawaii, during which participating companies share their products and industries, has become the largest event on Capitol Hill with over 1,500 members of Congress and staff attending, up from 1,000 the year prior and 500 the first year.

Local Area Chambers, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 4 Winner

The desire to create more opportunities for members to be involved where it matters most and engage more deeply within their own community drove the conception of Local Area Chambers. Traffic is a growing concern for our region, making it increasingly difficult for members to travel to events that are not in their neighborhood. Our objective was to increase accessibility for members, putting programming closer to work or home while facilitating connections, offering business development support and educating on community issues.

Bridging the Talent Gap, CoY 2018 Synopsis 1 - Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 4 Winner

Over the next five years, 26,000 new jobs are expected in the Charleston metro according to our regional Talent Demand Study. The biggest factor holding back job growth is the people to fill the positions. Our region cannot wait on system-wide changes in education to produce the needed workforce. The Chamber is working alongside regional partners to initiate and facilitate educational change, while bridging the current talent gap. Targeted at high school students and high-demand sectors, the Chamber's multi-prong approach includes: 1. High School Career Academies and Advisory Boards; 2. Nationally recognized Youth Apprenticeships; and 3. The Common Skills in High Demand report.

Public Policy and Advocacy, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Plano Chamber of Commerce

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 3 Winner

In 2017, Plano Chamber expanded and enhanced our advocacy efforts in preparation for a challenging legislative session for our business community. Property tax reform was a hot topic and one possible solution was to shift more of the burden to businesses. The bathroom bill was also being debated in both chambers. Key outcomes included a more robust legislative agenda, successful member education on vital issues facing the legislature, increased dialogue between the membership and elected officials, defeat of three bills that would have negatively impacted our membership, and a post-session scorecard that increased awareness on key votes taken by House and Senate members.

The LegacyTexas Business Center (Business Center) and new Chamber facility were designed with entrepreneurs, telecommuters, and business professionals in mind. The Business Center is an ideal space for holding meetings, collaborating with associates, or working independently. As a result of a longstanding partnership, LegacyTexas offered a unique opportunity for a facility that matched the needs of the organization and the individual members. With its modern, multi-use work environment, members have access to the ideal venue for conducting interviews, making presentations, hosting seminars, and closing business deals.

Leadership Education and Advancement Pipeline (LEAP), CoY 2018 Synopsis 1 - Des Moines Downtown Chamber

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 1 Winner

A last in the nation ranking with regards to Iowa's women-owned businesses and economic impact was concerning for our community. Among the 21 chambers in the region, none were addressing the issue. The Downtown Chamber designed Leadership Education and Advancement Pipeline (LEAP) to connect current and prospective women business owners to the resources, people, and initiatives that would stimulate their success. It has since become a model program for other chambers, affected the lives over 500 men and women, and was the winner of the Mid-American Chamber Executives' 2016 Event of the Year Award.

Implementing the Workforce Realization Occurring Cooperatively Strategy, CoY 2018 Synopsis 1 - Round Rock Chamber of Commerce

The Round Rock Chamber developed the Workforce Realization Occurring Cooperatively (WROC) strategy to address one of the community's biggest economic obstacles: the lack of an available pool of skilled workers.The multi-year, multi-phase strategy is designed to positively impact both short- and long-term workforce challenges.

Downtown DIG (Development Insights Group) Program, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Des Moines Downtown Chamber

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 1 Winner

A rapid influx of downtown development projects left businesses often wondering what was happening in their backyard. After a negative, explosive response to one key project, the Downtown Chamber created Downtown DIG (Development Insights Group) with the goal of connecting the business community to projects at their infancy in order to get ahead of general information and promote discussion. DIG has given exposure to nearly 40 projects since 2015, increased support and buy-in from downtown businesses, generated new membership dues, and has also provided the chamber with a respected reputation an in-the-know source.

Implementing the REV UP Round Rock Strategy, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Round Rock Chamber of Commerce

While Round Rock is home to one of the 20th Century's great entrepreneurial stories (i.e., Michael Dell), its own entrepreneurial ecosystem is practically non-existent. This worries stakeholders as we could become dependent on our business attraction efforts and the expansion of established firms. As such, we developed the REV UP Round Rock (REV UP) strategy; a multi-year framework for addressing our need for a vigorous entrepreneurial climate.
