Bridging the Talent Gap, CoY 2018 Synopsis 1 - Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 4 Winner

Over the next five years, 26,000 new jobs are expected in the Charleston metro according to our regional Talent Demand Study. The biggest factor holding back job growth is the people to fill the positions. Our region cannot wait on system-wide changes in education to produce the needed workforce. The Chamber is working alongside regional partners to initiate and facilitate educational change, while bridging the current talent gap. Targeted at high school students and high-demand sectors, the Chamber's multi-prong approach includes: 1. High School Career Academies and Advisory Boards; 2. Nationally recognized Youth Apprenticeships; and 3. The Common Skills in High Demand report.

Public Policy and Advocacy, CoY 2018 Synopsis 2 - Plano Chamber of Commerce

2018 Chamber of the Year, Category 3 Winner

In 2017, Plano Chamber expanded and enhanced our advocacy efforts in preparation for a challenging legislative session for our business community. Property tax reform was a hot topic and one possible solution was to shift more of the burden to businesses. The bathroom bill was also being debated in both chambers. Key outcomes included a more robust legislative agenda, successful member education on vital issues facing the legislature, increased dialogue between the membership and elected officials, defeat of three bills that would have negatively impacted our membership, and a post-session scorecard that increased awareness on key votes taken by House and Senate members.
