Brooklyn Shops is a borough-wide economic development initiative that assists neighborhood shopping districts by providing planning, promotion and technical assistance to help local merchants improve their street’s distinction, attractiveness and success. This 2006 report details findings based on census data, resident interviews, and a retail inventory. Many residents expressed sanitation and public safety as concerns and the recommendations included installing security cameras and increasing police presence to dissuade crime.
This press release reports on the kick-off breakfast at Café 400 on Nostrand Avenue that celebrated a culminating activity of Brooklyn Shops, the retail development program of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. A recent assessment found that crime in the area had drastically declined by 75% due to stronger police presence and community involvement and the installation of security cameras.
