ACCE joins in mourning the loss of John Tydings, former president of the Greater Washington, D.C., Board of Trade. Tydings died Sunday evening, Nov. 17. He was 72.
Tydings led the Greater Washington Board of Trade for 32 years (23 of them as president) before stepping down in 2002. In an email to board members, Jim Dinegar, president of the Washington Board of Trade, wrote, “In every manner possible, John presented the business voice so well and he applied himself all-out in everything he did. Greater Washington is better because John cared deeply about here. He cared about its people, its reputation, its attractiveness, its business climate, its hospitality and so much more. “
Tydings founded Leadership Greater Washington. In 1983 he was named "Washingtonian of the Year," and in 2003, Junior Achievement inducted him into the Washington Business Hall of Fame. In 1989, he was the recipient of ACCE's Professional Leadership Award as the outstanding chamber executive in America. In 2001, he was honored by Partners for Livable Communities with the Bridge Builder’s Award and was awarded American University’s Kogod School of Business Dean’s Community Leadership Award.
Services will be held Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Potomac, Md. Read more about Tydings and his work here.
Here are some memories from the chamber community:
"What a bright and vibrant man….class act." -- Frank Ryll, Jr., Director of Global Outreach, Florida Chamber of Commerce
"I remember the day I was in John's office and he excused himself for a moment to make a quick call. He was calling a Board Member, who was afraid of flying, and had to make a flight that day. John just wanted to try to alleviate their fear and to tell them he was thinking of them. I always tried to remember the way he reached out to someone he cared about. That is what made him an unique 'human being.'" -- Richard Blouse, President & CEO, Global Perspectives, LLC
"One of the most significant leaders in our industry. A class act beyond description." -- Joe Reitemeier, President & CEO, Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce
"John was such a thoughtful, intelligent man. I treasure the years of knowing him and working with him on the ACCE board." -- Rich Hadley, President & CEO, Greater Spokane Incorporated
"John Tydings reeks of integrity and humility! He defines gentleman and class act . . . a giant in our profession. Thoughts and prayers are with Donna and their family." -- Jim Anderson, President, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce
