145th Anniversary Celebration: Synopsis - San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce

2016 ACE: Award of Excellence

The anniversary celebration is hardly a new invention; in fact, our Chamber has celebrated its own since 1871. Yet, the San Diego Regional Chamber's 145th Anniversary Celebration warrants special attention because it not only represented another year of pro-business advocacy. It signaled a new era in which San Diego's leading business organization became the unified voice for binational collaboration and economic development for the entire Cali-Baja region, both San Diego and Baja California.

145th Anniversary Celebration: Synopsis - San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce

Synopsis:

The anniversary celebration is hardly a new invention; in fact, our Chamber has celebrated its own since 1871. Yet, the San Diego Regional Chamber’s 145th Anniversary Celebration warrants special attention because it not only represented another year of pro-business advocacy. It signaled a new era in which San Diego’s leading business organization became the unified voice for binational collaboration and economic development for the entire Cali-Baja region, both San Diego and Baja California.

2015 was a big year for the Chamber – Jerry Sanders, our Chamber President & CEO, was featured in The New York Times to discuss California’s high-speed rail project; our binational delegation trip to Washington, D.C. was highlighted in POLITICO; and the Chamber’s work in creating the first pedestrian walkway connecting a U.S. city to a Mexican international airport was covered in The Washington Post. Moreover, with the economic relationship between Mexico and the United States at the forefront of the presidential primaries, our team knew 2016 would become an even bigger year for our Chamber. Upon collaboration with the executive leadership, we concluded that the best way to celebrate the Chamber’s new position as a nationally-recognized champion for bipartisan and binational collaboration was to execute a news-themed campaign highlighting 145 years of the San Diego Regional Chamber “making headlines.”

Our campaign contained several components: first, we launched an email drive inviting Chamber members, partners, and elected officials to attend the event, and incorporated the Anniversary Celebration in all existing Chamber email communications. To reinforce our news theme, we enlisted the help of local media personalities – including ABC10 News’ Itica Milanes, who also served as the event’s co-host – to create a series of videos celebrating the past year’s advocacy wins while looking forward to the Chamber’s 2016 goals. We kept the news theme consistent throughout all aspects of the event by creating a program that resembled newspaper and table décor that also fit with the news theme.

The success of the Chambers 145th Anniversary Celebration was seen in the more than 900 guests that attended and the $252,000 raised for the Chamber through the event. In addition, we were able to expand the Chamber’s message through social media and broadcast media. The hashtag for the event (#Chamber145) “trended” in San Diego on Twitter. Through media outreach that included a media advisory and news release we garnered $36,693 in estimated advertising value in media placements. Media included live, on-site broadcasts from a TV station during the event which further added to our news theme. This event was key to increasing visibility and awareness of the Chamber, our mission, successes and goals for the future and delivered on all objectives.
