Clear the Air Challenge: Synopsis - Salt Lake Chamber

2016 ACE: Award of Excellence

In Utah, air quality is a top concern. During the summer months air is hot and still, causing vehicle emissions to build in the valleys -- resulting in poor air quality known as ground level ozone, which can be harmful to our health and our economy. To address this important issue, the Salt Lake Chamber brought several organizations together with the goal of improving the environment and life quality of our state's residents while highlighting the benefits of clean air for business and our economy -- the result: Clear the Air Challenge.

Clear the Air Challenge: Synopsis - Salt Lake Chamber

Synopsis:

In Utah, air quality is a top concern. During the summer months air is hot and still, causing vehicle emissions to build in the valleys – resulting in poor air quality known as ground level ozone, which can be harmful to our health and our economy.

To address this important issue, the Salt Lake Chamber brought several organizations together with the goal of improving the environment and life quality of our state’s residents while highlighting the benefits of clean air for business and our economy – the result: Clear the Air Challenge.

The Clear the Air Challenge is an annual month long competition, starting July 1, that gives Utahns the chance to reduce vehicle emissions by choosing alternative methods of transportation using TravelWise strategies. By driving less and driving smarter, participants ultimately help improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion and conserve energy in Utah.

The Clear the Air Challenge is the state’s largest clean air initiative – and it just keeps growing. The amount of participants (89% joined via through the involvement of their employers), speaks volumes about the willingness of the citizens in our state and business community to come together to make our region a better place to live.

Part of the Salt Lake Chamber’s mission statement is to “champion community prosperity,” and this initiative works towards this objective.

By utilizing a strong media campaign that comprises an interactive website, social media promotion, billboards, radio spots, featured video, speaking engagements and e-mail newsletters the Chamber has been able to reach tens of thousands in the community-at-large.

Since its inception in 2009, Challenge participants have saved over 11.7 million miles, eliminated over 900,000 trips, reduced over 4,200 tons of emission and have saved over $5 million dollars total.

Collectively in 2015, the 7,656 participants eliminated 141,557 tips, saved 2,464,140 miles, reduced 646.2 tons of emissions and saved $694,620 dollars.
