Greer Made Campaign: Synopsis - Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce

2016 ACE: Grand Award

According to a recent report from the Manufacturing institute, there are 2 million manufacturing positions that will go unfilled in the next decade due to lack of workforce. As baby boomers retire yet industry continues to grow, the gap of skilled workers widens. In addition, the same study showed that Gen Y, those between 19 and 33, ranked manufacturing as their least preferred career path. Locally, Greenville County eighth graders ranked manufacturing 14th out of 16 career clusters in their individual graduation plan. So if the previous generation is retiring and the next is uninterested, who will be working? For Greer, the problem hits close to home. With the largest BMW plant in the world less than 10 minutes from downtown, Greer has proven itself a progressive and innovative community built on a foundation of manufacturing and industry. The GreerMade certification program is designed to celebrate this tradition while promoting both the careers and companies associated with it, to the next generation of workforce.

Synopsis:

To do so, we have partnered with our local school districts, career centers, colleges and universities to better showcase GreerMade certified companies to students through unique training opportunities, apprenticeship and internship programs, as well as various events and functions. By connecting students, schools and employers we hope to help change the perception problem that has plagued the manufacturing industry.

The marketing campaign developed focuses on 2 key components: community pride and industry awareness. The campaign features social media posts, web presence, videos, print materials, as well as awareness collateral such as t-shirts and bumper stickers. Specific content varies, but mainly focuses on showcasing certified companies as well as students. A special effort is also made to feature businesses of all sizes and various industries.

The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to “promote economic prosperity for our members and the Greater Greer community.” The GreerMade initiative does just that. By working to grow the workforce of tomorrow, while promoting the businesses of today, member businesses and the greater community will reap the benefits.

Evaluation

The campaign has received praise from the business community and individuals alike. We have also received letters of support from South Carolina Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, as well as Representative Trey Gowdy. We have seen an increase in press coverage from local media, and have received numerous requests for information on the program. Since its launch, the number of certified companies has doubled. We are currently in the process of solidifying the first GreerMade affiliated apprenticeship program with a certified company, and continue to connect schools with local businesses for demonstrations and discussions.
