Lincoln Logs Event Campaign - Lincoln Chamber of Commerce

SYNOPSIS:

On April 13, 2013 the city of Lincoln, Nebraska broke two Guinness World Records for the tallest and largest structure built with Lincoln Logs using over 11,000 logs and reaching over 12 feet.

The idea for the record breaking event came shortly after Lincoln invested in the Lincoln Branding Initiative with the objective of creating a better image for the city. The Lincoln Logs event was created to further showcase Lincoln as a fun and interesting place to be. The event itself required six months of weekly planning meetings with representatives of 20 companies from across the city.

The initial designs proposed for the structure were submitted from the community and voted upon prior to the event on social media sites including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The final design, a replica of the Nebraska State Capitol, was created and constructed by DLR Group, a local architecture firm, in collaboration with five University of Nebraska-Lincoln architecture students assisted in the build.

The Lincoln Chamber worked hard to promote the event through a media tour. The tour encompassed local and regional radio and television interviews and newspaper coverage. National media outlets were also contacted including: Good Morning America, USA Today, The New York Times, MSNBC, and Yahoo!. All press kits were delivered in a miniature Lincoln Logs container and included extensive information on the event. The Lincoln Chamber also hired an AP photographer to ensure that each media outlets covering the story would be equipped with quality photos that documented the event.

To engage the community, Lincoln Logs were sold across the community for five dollars to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Participants were then able to contribute their autographed log to the overall structure at the record breaking event. Signs advertising the event were held in the student section at the 2013 Nebraska Spring Football Game, attended by over 60,000 fans.

Success came on April 13 when the Lincoln Chamber hosted over 3,175 people at the Lincoln Children’s Museum, a record breaking number for the museum itself. The event took place from 10 a.m – 5 p.m. and the actual build of the Lincoln Logs structure took five hours and fifty seven minutes.

In addition to watching the structure being built, visitors were invited to take their photo in a lumberjack inspired photo booth and build their own Lincoln Log cabins throughout the museum. The mayor of Lincoln and several other local celebrities attended the event to help construct the Lincoln Logs structure.

Overall, the record-breaking Lincoln Logs event created a tremendous amount of buzz around the city and nationwide. Several national media outlets including Yahoo! News, Forbes and the San Francisco Chronicle spotlighted the event as well. With a budget of $20K for the entire event, Lincoln received thousands of dollars in exposure by creating an event that still has visitors and residents talking and two Guinness World Records to prove its success.
