“Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” 125th Anniversary Book - Greater Des Moines Partnership

SYNOPSIS:

In 2013, the Greater Des Moines Partnership recognized the 125th anniversary of successful economic development work in central Iowa. The yearlong celebration began at the Partnership’s Annual Dinner in January, and culminated in November with the publication and release of a commemorative book titled, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.” Written by regionally renowned journalist, Dave Elbert, this beautiful, over-sized book was produced in partnership with the Des Moines Business Record, and the Iowa History Center at Simpson College.

The 180-page, full color book documents the historic foundation of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, its predecessor organizations, 125 years of ongoing economic development in Central Iowa, the business community’s historical accounts and signature accomplishments, the change agents who helped lift the region to reach new heights, and the vision plan that frames what Greater Des Moines’ future holds. These amazing stories are accurately captured and beautifully illustrated with photographs from the Partnership’s, local, and state archives documenting Greater Des Moines’ dramatic progress.

The book was unveiled at a public reception and book signing held during the Wonder of Words Festival, a local week-long event celebrating the written word and local authors. In addition, the book was digitally published via sophisticated page-turning software, making it available online.

The project timeline began in March of 2012, allowing for 18 months of research. The project team consisted of the Partnership’s CEO, Senior V.P. of Communications, Senior Designer; the Business Record’s Account Manager, Staff Writer and Designer; and Simpson College’s history professor and history graduate student. The publication and distribution budget was $131,500, which covered direct & indirect costs of the publication staff, mailing, promotion and overhead. The sale of both advertorial and advertising space provided sufficient revenues to cover the cost of publication with an acceptable profit margin to the publisher. The Partnership’s contribution was limited to staff time and expertise and $1,500 to cover the wages of the part-time summer intern. Ad sales goals were accomplished prior to deadline, and allowed for additional pages to accommodate business community participation. Sixty-five hundred copies were printed, with a complimentary copy mailed to each of the Partnership’s 4,700 regional members and investors. The project’s success prompted the publisher to share the concept with peers as a wonderful example of a smart publishing partnership in the community.

The project’s primary goal, as the title of the book suggests, was to celebrate the community’s “Giants”, organization leaders who elevated the region with their vision, commitment, and often with their backs. The project’s secondary goal was to promote the organization’s value proposition to the community at large, demonstrating a long history of leadership, visioning and economic development success tied to the business community’s investment in the organization. The project’s tertiary goal was to provide an historical record in the business community’s voice documenting Greater Des Moines’ recent and current vibrancy and multiple national recognitions. All three were accomplished beyond expectation.
