Through dynamic pictures, writing and design, the Greater Omaha Chamber’s annual We Don’t Coast magazine boldly tells the world who we are, how we operate and why we chose to live in the center. The stars of the publication are businesses, institutions and individuals that are achieving success and having a positive impact in the community.
The Chamber uses the magazine, first and foremost, as a recruiting tool to encourage others to locate or expand here – a way for them to “see themselves living in Greater Omaha.” The Chamber encourages area businesses and institutions to join these efforts by including the publication in their talent recruiting and relocation packages. In addition, the magazine is used to create opportunities for Chamber member visibility (through advertising and story/photo opportunities) and enhance the region’s brand and image.
The Chamber first began publishing the magazine (formerly Omaha: Extraordinary Opportunities) in 2007; a collaborative endeavor that involves close coordination between Chamber staff and the publisher, currently The Omaha World-Herald. The Chamber team is responsible for overall conception, direction and story idea generation – focusing on people and institutions that serve to enhance our region. The Omaha World-Herald brings vision to reality with a design, writing and editing team. Throughout the process, Chamber staff works in concert with the publisher to ensure the overall vision is being achieved.
As the publisher, The Omaha World-Herald manages the overall budget from writing to design and final printing of 12,000 full-color copies of the magazine. It is also available online through omahachamber.org and Omaha.com/chamber – the region’s most viewed news and information site. The publication serves as a revenue generator for the Chamber, bringing in a net profit of $40,000 for 2015.
The Chamber is devoted to producing a tool that will help people make an enthusiastic choice to move to or stay in Greater Omaha. We measure the effectiveness of the magazine primarily through circulation and feedback. So far, we have distributed more than 9,000 copies of the 2015 magazine to area businesses, institutions and individuals. Thousands of copies have been sent outside the region. To date, the 2015 publication has received more than 13,000 online impressions.
“Any candidate interviewed from outside of Omaha generally receives Chamber information to assist in recruiting them to our community. The magazine is a wonderful resource, perfect for those recruiting and relocation packages.” – Heather Christensen, human resources generalist, OneWorld Community Health Centers, Inc.
In order to meet the growing workforce needs of the future, we know that Omaha cannot remain a ‘best-kept’ secret. The Chamber uses its We Don’t Coast publication across the region – and the country – to proudly tell and celebrate our community’s story; communicate our character and quality of life; and grow, retain and attract business and talent – an effective way to reach a wide audience and help the Chamber promote a community that refuses to coast!
